July 15, 2013 – I think the glass is about done… not sure

I’ve come to think that it’s a lot easier to paint highly detailed cut glass like in Blush than this one.
There’s a lot of subtlety and shades of green that are giving me a challenge! Time to move on to the rose on the fence rail and see how what I’ve done her sits with me.

I’m taking it really, really slowly, seeing all the layers of color and contrasts in the values. Though it’s far from done, from a distance, it’s starting to read. It’s easier than it seems – really! – to paint glass. It’s a process of taking it slow and painting what we see.

Memo is coming along – like you said, putting the flesh colors on his face brings him alive. Love the sheepskin, looking so wooly.
Look at that, Miss Pamela! It’s becoming a rose. She asked “who did that?!” You did!
Wow, Susie, your perseverance is paying off! The foreground and the background are separating and there is wonderful rhythm on this piece. Love it!
Mickey – your background is wonderful and look at the wonderful contrast between it and the rose petals. Can’t wait to see where you’ll take this!

Libby is creating a new iris piece. I love the combination of purples, rusts, rose colors.
Shannon’s rose – getting more definition and depth. I’m so drawn to the freshness of the background. Those gorgeous transparent colors!
Paulette has just finished a wildly colored garden jumble around some red poppies. Amazing detail.
Marilee’s French terrace has chairs. We were sorting out creating the shadow on the close edge of the tablecloth and not losing the highlight on the wicker chairs. A place to use masking fluid.
Susie’s roses are coming along – the red rose is called “Hot Cocoa.” More of a red-brown rose. This is going to be a stunning painting!

Looking at the photo I see a few places I want to work on a bit more. Fun to see the silhouette of the subject once the background is all in.

Adrienne is back and started today on a picture of her grandson. Adorable.
Pat is putting in her crocus (is that what they are?) The ones in the back are fuzzy, those in the front are going to be sharp. Nice work!
Susie’s penstemon are getting some volume and definition. She says still work to do on the background. Needs to go back. We’ll get there. LOVE the color. Fabulous!

Shannon started a new painting of one of my rose pictures – the New Dawn climber on the side of the house, taken one rainy June a while ago. She took a Jeanne Vodden workshop last week. Beautiful start. Makes me want to paint it too!
And she is just about finished with this one of her son, Brendan.
Paula’s beautiful rose bouquet is coming along!
Libby getting started on a big gorgeous wine-y purple-y iris.
And just finishing this absolutely stunning iris triptych. It was so fun to watch this piece evolve.
Susie is back from a big family trip to Kauai and is picking up again on her beautiful bowl-full of roses.
Marilee painting some lovely little scene from France somewhere. I want to go there! Nice work in sending the background back today.
Holly is giving her fish a place to swim before painting it.
A Confession
I fell into the pit of getting waaaaayyyy behind in updating this online art journal. Once the second weekly group started, I didn’t keep it in my routine and it got harder and harder to get back on track. I swore that I wouldn’t do that – I’d keep it up. And I didn’t. My niece Amanda and I spent all day yesterday getting the images sized and uploaded and posting them.
As of right now I’m completely current – up to the class we had today. To all of you subscribers to the blog updates, I’m SO sorry for the inundation of emails. I didn’t realize you got one for EACH post! Holy Cow! I will endeavor to make sure the updates are kept up so that you can follow along on the progress.
June 27 – Fuzzy Backgrounds Today
Sondra’s nice work – she had fun.
Joanne really let herself play with the paint and the water. I loved the shapes she found.
A happy Pat with her fuzzy background. Nice job!
Christina has no problem just playing. Here’s her vivid result.
Mickey says she’s not painting as she wants to be and the result says something else.
Susie worked hard – she paints with plenty of water, which is why her work is so fresh. This also makes it hard to control within the wet. I love what she did today.
